However, those were still some of the ones that I've been most looking forward to, and the festival is my only way to see them (other than the Cinematheque, but it is unlikely that they will be present there). It's also unfortunate that it is this particular year, because each year I go deeper and deeper into cinephilia, and now many of those films at the deepest depths have vanished!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15945478.post-82297394002948334822008-08-20T13:38:00.000-04:002008-08-20T13:38:00.000-04:00Eli,I'd hate to overstate my point. We don't know what was and wasn't submitted to the festival, and we don't know the reasons behind the most obvious absences (six Argentinian films & no Martel, though.... really?). Obviously, TIFF serves a lot of masters, and the hardcore cinephiles are just one of the groups to consider.

I must admit that even though I went to Cannes, and even though I tend to avoid stuff that will be released commercially by the year's end, I still should have little trouble finding 50 or 60 films to see this year.

TIFF programs so much that they would really, really have to foul things up to devolve to the point where they weren't an essential part of the film fan's calendar. That being said, I totally feel your pain!Jeremy Heilmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11025198716777000854noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15945478.post-15963972124227124032008-08-20T13:23:00.000-04:002008-08-20T13:23:00.000-04:00Dan, the official phrasing from the festival is:&q...Dan, the official phrasing from the festival is:

"Not valid for Gala screenings at Roy Thomson Hall or presentations at the Visa Screening Room at the Elgin Theatre."

So, yeah, I think that refers specifically to the nightly 6 & 9 p.m. screenings sponsored by Visa.Jeremy Heilmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11025198716777000854noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15945478.post-35926376735592978322008-08-20T12:46:00.000-04:002008-08-20T12:46:00.000-04:00Hello, a regular reader and Torontonian here. These are the ones that I'm most bitter about:

Lav Diaz
Grandieux
Garrel
Hong Sang-soo
Soi Cowboy
United Red Army

It's hard to believe that TIFF isn't becoming more commercial, especially when films by the same directors were accepted in previous years. I would say that even last year we would have seen some of these in the lineup. It also explains why the Visions program is cut down so much.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15945478.post-25200432608900430212008-08-20T04:19:00.000-04:002008-08-20T04:19:00.000-04:00hey - so this means that you're no longer able to ...hey - so this means that you're no longer able to see the evening showings (which are usually the premieres, right?) of films at the elgin on the 50 pass?

there were always at least a handful of elgin showings on my choices - that's just crap.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15945478.post-39769056807250262442008-08-19T14:44:00.000-04:002008-08-19T14:44:00.000-04:00Point taken!Point taken!Shannon the Movie Moxiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02882101582835293159noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15945478.post-65665760903463026242008-08-19T13:30:00.000-04:002008-08-19T13:30:00.000-04:00For the record, the Special Presentation count thi...For the record, the Special Presentation count this year is 51 vs. last year's 48, so it's not like they are programming films that used to be in other selections as Special Presentations... It's just that there are fewer films in the other selections overall.Jeremy Heilmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11025198716777000854noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15945478.post-67166025094539998692008-08-19T13:21:00.000-04:002008-08-19T13:21:00.000-04:00Wow, looking at the number crunching that way it m...Wow, looking at the number crunching that way it makes me a little worried.

With so many Special Presentations this year, I can't imagine that they would always be at the Elgin, but alas it does reduce chances to see them. I'm still a little in shock that the passes purchased through the box office but everything at the Elgin off limits.

As much as I'm excited the full schedule is released today, so much of the selection process comes down to scheduling.
